1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages to using gas chromatography for the analysis of forensic and/or pharmaceutical samples ?
2. A gas chromatogram of a sample shows several peaks that appear very close to each other. How would you determine that each peak results from a single compound? In other words, how do you show that there are no overlapping or co-eluting compounds. The assignment starts by asking you to provide a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of using gas chromatography for the analysis of pharmaceutical and forensic samples. The second question can (and should) be approached from different viewpoints. First consider that you can change the GC conditions - describe how you would do that and which parameters are most convenient and easily altered. Also keep in mind that GC by itself is only a separation technique - what is usually added to it in order to detect compounds and generate a chromatogram?
