Transition to Leadership:
Mr. Fahad, Imran andIbrahim were promoted within their organizations intomanagement positions. Each oneof them found the transition as a challenge. Mr. Fahad waspromoted as director of catering for the Decent group ofrestaurants. With the promotion, herealized that things would never be the same again. As a matter offact he would no longer to able toparticipate in gossips and chit-chat with colleagues. He explainshis new role as director asdemoralizing. “At first I was very harsh, making statementlike you can either work my way or take thehighway to home. In all this I was forgetting that my friends andcolleagues were also intransition”. He admitted that his style alienated abouteveryone with whom he worked. Mr. Imran waspromoted to technical manager from being a junior programmer. Hetalks about the uncertainty he felt:“It was challenging to be suddenly giving orders to yourpeers, when just the day before you wereone of them. You always try to be careful not to offend anyone.It’s really strange when youwalk into a room and suddenly the whole conversation changes.People don’t want to be open whenyou are a boss”.
Mr. Ibrahim ispromoted as the president of Adamjee Insurance Company. He startedas a customer relation officer inthe company and then left behind his colleagues in number ofpromotions to the present position. Itis his quick rise which created problems. He says “colleagueswould say different things andonly God knows what they talked about behind myback.”
