Smart Home Patient Monitoring System

Abstract -

The increasing number elder people and illnesses that require continuous monitoring, along with the demand on hospital rooms and shortage of medical support, home monitoring is becoming more and more of a necessity. This will give patients and elderly people the privilege of having frequent healthcare monitoring done in the comfort of their own homes. In this project, we intend to design and implement a smart system that allows monitoring the vital signs of patients by first gathering patient's heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, body temperature, and respiratory rate. After this data is sensed and collected through a set of biomedical sensors, a microcontroller unit will process this data and then send summary and relevant information into smart monitoring system that can alert about improper conditions. A simple smart phone application will be developed to be used for alerting purposes. The design of the system must consider several challenges, such as practicality, security and privacy issues, data collection and storage, different alerting methods, and cost of the system.

Outcomes (list of expected outcomes for successful completion)

To build a prototype system that detects vital signs, and store them in database, then process data and build a simple alerting smart phone application that will generate alert for certain scenarios that are concluded from acquired dada.
