Thought Paper #1 Assignment Sheet
These papers are meant to be an opportunity for you to engage the material from the course in a more personal and reflective way than a regular exam. I'll be grading these based on your originality of thought, and for your ability to critically evaluate aspects of social identity in communication. Feel free to be thoughtful and creative, as I would rather have you engage the material in a meaningful way than regurgitate definitions. To help give some structure to what I am looking for I suggest you write using one of the following topics.
Write a 1-2 page response using one of the following prompts:
1. Take a concept we've discussed in the first three weeks worth of readings and apply it to your real life, do you have an experience that supports what the authors have said? In your paper provide a thick description of your personal example and then do a brief analysis of how your experience relates to one of the concepts from class.OR
2. We talked about how the universe sees us, and the expectations that come from our identity categories; therefore I'd like you to provide a brief narrative of how you think the world expects you to behave based on an aspect of your identity. Then, I would like you to reflect on how that expectation molded and shaped who you are today. OR
3. Take a contemporary representation of a form of identity and briefly summarize it (should take no more than a paragraph) and critically evaluate whether or not you think this is a positive or negative representation. What do you think are the implications of this representation?
