In the paragraph of "Tone Poem" on p. 217, Hoffer states, "The most important type of program music is the tone poem, or symphonic poem. It is the rather long, complex orchestral work in one movement that develops a poetic idea, creates a mood, or suggests a scene."

Many Romantic composers such as Brahms still wrote the more traditional multi-movement symphonies. Some composers such as Tchaikovsky and Schumann wrote multi-movement symphonies which are considered programmatic. But these are also not single but multi-movement works.

Why do you think that the more progessive composers such as Liszt, Berlioz, and Strauss wrote major orchestral works in one movement rather than the more traditional multi-movement forms? How does this form fit with the characteristics of the romantic period (refer to Chapter 22 in the text)?

please answer it as close to your knowledge. (in 100 words)

I will also upload someone else answer to the question and you need to comment on it, (to disagree or agree) in just 50 words.(use the answer below to answer the question above) note: you can just paraphrase to answer above question.

other students answer:

"As the book discusses, the Romantic period was known for its resentment of rules and restraints and freedom of expression. I think that these composers were doing just that by writing single movement works which goes astray from the normal multi-movement forms. The composers were focused on writing music that was more straight to the point so that the public could better appreciate the story in the music without having to listen to many movements to finally understand the point. The single-movement approach made the composers trend-setters in a way and allowed people greater access to the music by making it much shorter and easier to hear in a short amount of time. The characteristics of the romantic period hold true with the works of Listz, Berlioz, and Strauss by branching away from the norm yet expressing their emotions in a condensed form. "
