1. Discussion Board Post One - Discuss Readings
After reading Victor Villanueva "Spic in English!" on p. 163, tell us his main argument (or one of his arguments, main points). Do you agree with him? Why or why not? (1 paragraph, 3-4 sentences). Do the same thing for the other essay that you chose in chapter Three. For example, if you chose to read the Taylor Garcia essay, tell us his main argument (or one of his arguments, points). Do you agree with him? Why or why not? (1 paragraph, 3-4 sentences.
2. Discussion Board Post 2 - Quote Exercise (Two quotes total)
This week I want you to work on Analysis. One way to do this is to spend more time on your quotes, and spend more time showing us how selected quotes can support and add to your argument. Choose one quote from the Villanueva essay, and one quote from the essay of your choosing. Complete the "quote exercise" below -- one from each essay. You may number it, like I show below, or just write in one free flowing paragraph. It may feel as if you cannot write this much about one quote. If this is the case, choose a new quote, or spend more time thinking about how the quote supports your argument. Textual evidence is the key to your argument, and analysis shows that you think deeply about a subject. The quote exercise guidelines are included in this module, and also here:
1) Introduce the quote (For example, "As Kozol writes..." or "Kozol discusses educational apartheid when he writes..."
2) Provide the quote
3) Explain the quote (what is the author trying to tell us? Put this into your own words. Make sure you understand what the author is trying to say)
4) Explain the quote (Can you clarify a point or provide more information about this quote?)
5) Explain the quote (Again, can you dig deeper, analyze the quote to add to our understanding of the subject? Is there a counterargument you would like to make?)
6) Tie back to the essay question/central claim if you can at this point. You may even want to write "This supports my argument because..." or "This adds to my point..."
