Assignment - Summary-response Essay
Instruction: Choose an article (of maximum 400 words), or a book you have read recently. In the first (introductory) paragraph, summarize the most important information that your reader needs to know: the name of the article/book, the author, and the main points of the article/book. Be sure to add a thesis statement and your thesis/position on the topic in the second paragraph. Then, provide the reasons supporting your thesis in the third and fourth paragraph. Finally, reiterate your reasons in the concluding / fifth paragraph. Use the checklist below as a guide
INTRODUCTION paragraph
The first paragraph summarizes the text in an objective way. It includes the title of the work and the author's name.
The second paragraph includes a thesis statement, a thesis (the student's position) that introduces the response, and the two reasons supporting her claim.
BODY paragraphs
Paragraphs three and four develop the two reasons with supporting details (reference + explanation + example).
CONCLUSION paragraph
Paragraph five restates the central claim of the response and provides an opinion, a prediction, or a suggestion.
