Cinemas aldehyde (a fragrance compound) can be made by base-catalyzed aldol condensation reaction between Benz aldehyde and acetaldehyde. The feeds are contacted with sodium hydroxide in a stirred tank reactor. The product is neutralized and washed with water to remove salts. The washed product is usually separated by batch distillation, in which unreacted feeds are recovered first, followed by product, and a polymeric waste is left as residue. The batch distillation product can be further purified by vacuum distillation. Sketch a block flow diagram of the process.
