A young couple rushes into an emergency room carrying their young child who was hit by a car while playing in the road. The child has lost quite a bit of blood and will not live without a blood transfusion. When the doctor in the ER suggests the blood transfusion, the parents flatly refuse and begin to pray over their child. Their religious beliefs will not allow the transfusion to happen. As the hospital administrator, you are informed of the situation and are charged with making a decision on what the hospital’s next step should be. Should you simply allow the parents to forgo the blood transfusion, or should you obtain a court order to force the parents into allowing the transfusion to take place? Use the seven-step decision model to explain how you arrived at your answer.
