Part -1:

Create your own study on a topic of your choosing:

a) Create Research question

A researcher was interested in studying the phenomenon known as a social distance, the reluctance of people to associate with members of different ethnic and racial groups.  She designed an experiment in which students enrolled in a lecture course were asked to choose a discussion group (all meeting at the same time in the same building) based on only the ethnic-racial stereotype associated with the names of the teaching assistant.

Group

A

B

C

D

b) State the Research Hypothesis

Student's enrollment in a lecture course dose not varies based on the ethnic race of the teaching assistant.

c) State the Null Hypothesis

Student's enrollment in lecture course varies depending on the ethnic race of the teaching assistant.

d) What Statistical test would you use to determine if your research hypothesis is true?

Part -2:

1. A public health researcher is interested in the relationship between job satisfaction and stress. Within a large corporation, the psychologist asked a random sample of workers 2 questions. The first question asked how satisfied workers were with their job and had them rate their satisfaction on a scale from 1 to 50. The second question asked how stressful they found their job in a given week. Again the workers rated their stress level on a scale from 1 to 50. What type of statistical test best assesses the relationship between job satisfaction and level of stress?

2. A large university wants to compare the mathematical abilities of its male and female students. A researcher selects 100 men and 100 women at random from each of the four classes, and administers a math test. The men average 500 on the test, with a standard deviation of 120. The women average 450 on the test, with a standard deviation of 110. What test would be appropriate to determine whether the difference between men and women is real or due to chance variation?

3. A public health researcher is interested in attitudes towards the disabled. She believes that contact with someone who is disabled might have an effect on peoples' attitudes. To test her hypothesis, she measured attitudes toward the disables both before and after contact with an individual in a wheelchair. What type of statistical test should she use to determine if contact with a disabled person changes peoples' attitudes toward the disabled?

4. A psychologist is interested in conducting a study of grand juries in L.A. county to see how they compare with the demographics of potential jurors in the population. She wants to see if jury panels are really representative of the population. The first variable she examines is age. The percentage of people over 65 in the population of potential jurors is 25%, but the number of people aged 65 or more who were involved in grand jury trials was 38%. She wants to know if the difference between people over 65 on juries is significantly different than that of the population. What test should she use?

5. Create a study on a topic of your choosing

a) Create 1 Research Question

b) State the Research Hypothesis

c) State the Null Hypothesis

d) What statistical test would you use to determine if your nullhypothesis should be rejected?

6. Use the internet and/or the websites listed on the lecture slides identify 1 epidemic outbreak that has occurred somewhere in the world in 2013-2014. Next, describe how you would use descriptive epidemiology to investigate the person, place, and time factors surrounding this outbreak.

a) Describe the outbreak, including number of persons affected, location(s), and disease/condition

b) Who would you interview about the outbreak?

c) What questions do you ask (at least 2 for each factor)?

i. Person

ii. Place

iii. Time

7. What are the host, agent, and environmental factors surrounding the AIDSepidemic in the United States (be specific)?

a) Agent -

b) Host (name at least five) -

c) Environmental (name at least five)
