While tourism expansion has been spatially focused on the beach for much of the past 50 years, as witnessed for instance, the slogan of the three ‘S' of tourism - sun, sand and surf - the ocean and the marine milieu as a whole has become one of the new frontiers and fastest growing segment of many economies, particularly for Small Island Developing States. However, since of the highly dynamic nature of the coastal environment in such economies and their special characteristics, any development which interferes with the natural ecosystem may have severe results for the long-term sustainability is the environment in diminutive economies.
