Q1. The Hershey-Chase experiment was a sequence of experiments conducted in 1953 by Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase that confirmed DNA's preeminent role in an inheritance. In their first experiment, bacteria were infected with T2 phage containing radioactive 32P-labeled DNA. In a second experiment, the separate batch of bacteria was infected with T2 phage containing radioactive 35S-labeled protein. Bacteria were after that separated from the phage coats by blending followed by centrifugation. In the first experiment, most radioactivities were found in the infected bacteria, while in the second experiment most radioactivities were found in the phage coat. These experiments demonstrated that DNA is the genetic material of phage and that protein does not transmit genetic information. Can this same experiment be carried out with 35S and 14C? Describe it?
Q2. List all systems in which some component is based on movement of material across a cell or organelle membrane. List the whether the movement is diffusion, osmosis, active transport, or bulk flow. Illustrate the adaptations that increase the efficiency of this movement.
The genome of a particular bacterium is approximately 4 million base pairs. If this bacterium can complete a round of DNA replication in 40 minutes, how fast must its replisome travel?
Examples of positive and negative control of transcription can be found in the regulation of expression of the bacterial operons lac and trp. Use these two operon systems to describe the difference between positive and negative regulation.
Where did you see art incorporated into the idea of infection diseases?
What would be the free energy for proton movement from the intermembrane space to the matrix in a mitochondria under the following sets of conditions (please put answers in kcal/mole, and assume room temperature of 25° C).
You are an agricultural geneticist and you suspect that cross-pollination between genetically modified food crops and neighbouring weeds may have led to the spread of a gene for herbicide resistance to wild plants
A plant grows three inches faster per day when placed on a window sill than it does when placed on a on a coffee table in the middle of the living room.
A young woman distance runner has recently not been performing well and has complained of feeling lethargic and sluggish. You perform a graded exercise test to VO2max including blood samples to attempt to determine possible cause.
In the stable form of protein, what is generally oriented to the interior of the protein molecule?
Describe the distinction between plasmogamy and karyogamy and how this distinction leads to dikaryotic hyphae .
In the evolution of land plants we see several major trends. Describe how the evolution of seeds decreases a plant's dependency upon water.
What in the configuration of the anterior compartment makes this region particularly liable to an increase in intracompartmental pressure?
After the microarray slides were hybridized with labeled cDNAs derived from these 5 populations of RNAs, the data were analyzed by several different comparisons.
