PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project in the course is a comprehensive course-level assessment on various aspects of cost estimation.

In the project, you are required to prepare construction estimates for an office, collate the estimates in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, briefly justify them, and also justify the choice of the spreadsheet style for each estimate.

Course Objectives Tested:

1. Demonstrate a systematic approach to completing the estimating process in commercial construction.

2. Demonstrate basic skills required to measure and calculate quantities.

3. Describe the methods used for pricing the various takeoff elements in a construction project estimate.

4. Prepare a takeoff of concrete work for a construction project.

5. Prepare a takeoff of masonry work for a construction project.

6. Prepare a takeoff for a construction project using metal components.

7. Estimate the quantity of woods and plastics.

8. Estimate the pricing for thermal and moisture protection for a project.

9. Estimate the doors and windows, finish materials, and equipment needed for a construction project.

10. Prepare an estimate using fire suppression, plumbing, mechanical and electrical factors and Means CostWorks data sets.

11. Prepare an estimate using earthwork factors and Means CostWorks data sets.

12. Prepare a price estimate for construction equipment and excavation work.

13. Apply assembly and approximate estimating techniques.

14. Analyze equipment and general requirements in the estimating process.

15. Prepare a price estimate of concrete, masonry, structural steel, carpentry, and miscellaneous items.

Title: Building Construction Proposal

Assume that you are part of a construction company and you have to prepare cost estimates for the construction of a branch office of a software development company, which has an expected occupancy of 100 people.

Perform the following tasks:

Task 1:

Prepare cost estimates for components such as excavation, masonry, concrete, interior finishes, plumbing, electrical, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC).

You may choose Excel, CostWorks, or both to prepare the estimates. Justify your choice of spreadsheet style for each estimate in a separate Word document.

Task 2:

Collate the estimates in a PowerPoint presentation. Briefly describe each estimate in the Notes area of the respective slide.

Submission Requirements:

Submit the following:

1. Cost estimates in Excel or CostWorks format

2. Justification of the spreadsheet type in a Word document (font: Arial, size 12, double-spacing; citation style: APA; length: 2-3 pages)

3. Descriptions of the estimates in a PowerPoint presentation.
