Traditionally molded clay bricks are one of the most dominantly used building materials in Africa. The clay bricks are made mostly by small scale businesses. Production is done mostly in rural areas or peri-urban areas. The raw materials required to make clay bricks are acquired from the natural environment. Small scale brick making has been contributing positively to livelihood of communities in rural areas. However, the procedures that are used to make bricks threatens the quality of the natural environment. The purpose of this study is to examine the burdens and benefits of small scale brick making in Tshiulungoma Village, South Africa.
