Body language is a form of nonverbal communication that includes gestures and expressions. Incorporating it into classroom teaching is so important for creating a positive environment and getting students engaged in learning. A few ways that I can add energy in the classroom through body language include:
Eye contact – A single look from across the classroom is a very powerful way to communicate with a student. Eye contact can be used for both praises and to show disappointment.
Facial expressions – A smile is a quick and easy way to communicate. It can easily change the mood in the classroom.
Posture – Standing and walking straight shows confidence and students are more apt to follow your directions.
Proximity – Standing close to difficult students can discourage unwanted behavior.
Use the whole classroom and not just stand/sit behind the desk. This helps keep students on task.
Put finger on your chin – This encourages students to think.
Using body language helps students become engaged in classroom instruction or activities. It adds positive energy to the class and encourages students to participate.
b. Create or find a poem (any style) which reflects/describes your thoughts on teaching diverse population in the classroom. Make sure your poem has a title and demonstrates your overall understanding of the importance of including diversity in classroom curriculum.
