Need a response post for two different classmates, & do so in dept ad to the conversation.
The key is to be specific and detailed. If you agree with your classmate, be very specific as to why and seek to add information to what your classmate has said Include at least one quote from your Tindall and Shi text in each response.
1) If I were an American voter living in the year 1912 I would have voted for Theodore Roosevelt of the Progressive Party. His views on being a president of the people is very appealing. He also had a strong hand in foreign policy which proved to be very important in the long run. In the book it states, " He was the first truly activist president." which is shown in how he often gave speeches on honesty and ones civic duty (Tindall and Shi, 924). Roosevelt had a prominent role in foreign affairs one of his great achievements was the creation of the Panama Canal.
The building of this canal was not a simple process for Roosevelt or congress. Not everyone in America was happy with the actions that Roosevelt took to gain the canal zone from Colombia but Roosevelt was uneffected by these opinions, " I took the Canal Zone and let congress debate; and while the debate goes on the [construction of the] Canal does too."(Tindall and Shi, 927). 1) The canal just serves as on small accomplishment that Roosevelt had during his presidency that would have made voting for him a good decision. Roosevelt was willing to go to any lengths under the law to achieve was the people needed and wanted. He was all about the success and good will of the country.
2) If I were to choose, I think that I would have voted for Theodore Roosevelt. There are several reasons, including his tactic on foreign policy and the type of ideals he supported. Based on the videos and the readings, Ted seemed to be a person who truly represented the people. He did not stick to strict republican policies, but rather policies that were for the people. According to the book, " In the southern mills, a fourth of the employees were below the age of fifteen, and children as young as eight worked alongside adults twelve hours a day, six days a week. As a result, they received little or no education." Child labor was in demand after the civil war had ended and one of Theodore''s progressive reform sought to end this labor as well as fight for working conditions in general. Also, TR created the first Food and Drug act that prevented adulteration of consumer goods.
Small concepts like these made me favor Roosevelt as a president. In addition, Roosevelt was a very effective in foreign policy. When the Japanese had defeated the Russian fleet, U.S. leaders became worried about the Japanese securing the Philippines so Roosevelt demonstrated his quick wits by sending Taft to establish what became known as the Taft-Katsura agreement. In this agreement, " the United States accepted Japanese control of Korea in exchange for Japan acknowledging U.S. control of the Philippines." I think Theodore Roosevelt''s plan to maintain peace while securing the Philippines was a brilliant strategy. While acting as a peacemaker in East Asia, Roosevelt simultaneously showed the U.S.''s dominance in Latin America. Without asking for permission, Roosevelt created the Roosevelt Corollary, helping to establish the U.S. as a prominent force in Latin America and making sure they paid their debts. Ted''s way of being an all-around-president really caught my attention, and he would''ve earned my vote had I lived during that time.
