Moderate amounts of conflict can be a constructive force in groups if the conflict is managed competently. When it is not, conflict can become destructive. The methods for managing conflict vary in complexity and skill. This means that a group member may consider his or her own capabilities when choosing a communication style to management conflict within their group. In this assignment, you will explore conflict and how to best communicate in situations of conflict.

1. Describe a situation in which you were involved in destructive conflict. How could it have been managed differently?

2. Describe a situation in which you were involved in constructive conflict. How was this situation different from the first?

3. Should group members always use the collaborating style and avoid the competing (power-forcing) style? Why or why not?
