A separator divides a process stream into three phases: a liquid organic stream, a liquid aqueous stream, and a gas stream. The feed stream contains three components, all of which are present to some extent in the separated steams. The composition and flow rate of the feed stream are known. All the streams will be at the same temperature and pressure. The phase equilibrium constants for the three components are available.
a. How many design variables must be specified in order to calculate the output stream compositions and flow rates?
b. How would you optimize these variables if the objective of the separator was to maximize recovery of condensable components into the organic liquid stream? What constraints might limit the attainable recovery?
A distillation column separates benzene from toluene using a control scheme similar to that shown in Figure (a). Make a practice HAZOP study of the plant section and add any instrumentation that is needed to develop the full P and I diagram.
Coal gasification is carried out at 850 °C and 40 atmospheres pressure, by reaction of coal with steam and oxygen. The empirical formula of the coal is roughly CH0.8S0.013. What materials of construction would you recommend for:
List the types of separator that could be considered for. Bearing in mind the nature of the process, what type of separator would you recommend for this duty?separating the solids from the liquid
Select any process/chemical engineering topic of your interest and in about 1000 words explain how modeling is involved in its study and development. regards Mohammed
1. It is desired to use 28.32 m 3 /min of air (metered at a pressure of 101.3 kPa and 294.1 K) in a process. This amount of air which is at rest enters the fan suction at a pressure of 741.7 mm Hg and a temperature of 366.3 K and is discharged at a p..
Sulfur dioxide produced by the combustion of sulfur in air is absorbed in water. Pure SO2 is then recovered from the solution by steam stripping. Make a preliminary design for the absorption column.
What is the required flow rate of cooling water to the exchanger between the wasteheat boiler and the absorber and how much heat must be removed by the two heat exchangers cooling the recycled absorber liquid? Why is there a need to remove this heat?
Discuss the applicability of each model - Does it differ based on the interactions you would expect for each model. Can you conclude that one of the models is 'better' than the others from your graphs/analysis in Problems 3.1-2?
Why fluids are important in chemical engineering - enormous number of materials normally exist as gases or liquids, or can be transformed into such phase and explain systematic description of change in fluid systems, mechanical change
Calculate the volume of 0.25 M NaI that would be needed to precipitate all the g2+ion from 45 mL of a 0.10 M Hg(NO3)2 solution according to the following reaction:
question 1with regard to the asymmetric heck reaction - from the rccent literature 2010-2014 please give three examples
It is common that people are exposed to more than one hazardous substance at a time. The different substances may interact such that one substance may alter the toxicity of one or more of the chemicals present. Discuss the possible interactions th..
