Side-chain interactions - the "Big Three"
Major types of noncovalent interactions that one sees again and again in Biochemistry :1) charge/charge (electrostatic / Coulomb interactions)2) H-bonding3) Hydrophobic interactions .
Dr. Gerry Reeck calls these "The Big Three"
Consider several side chains -- note: side chains -- of amino acids. For each side chain listed, indicate which interaction or interactions (from The Big Three) each side chain could participate in, based on its structure.
For Gly, you would say "none." But for all those I do list the answer will be one, two or even three of The Big Three. Assume pH of 7 in formulating your answers unless otherwise indicated.Val:Phe:His: analyze the form that predominates below pH 6.Tyr:Ser:Met:Lys (at pH below the side chain pKa):
Calculate the amount of energy in kilojoules needed to change 117g of water ice at -10degrees Celcius to steam at 125 degrees Celcius
For which one of the following reactions is the value of delta H rxn equal to delta Hf for the product
Half an alka seltzer tablet is dissolved and completely reacted in 25mL of HCL, and the gas produced displaces 0.240L of water from a secondary flask.
Consider the halide ions as nucleophiles. Briefly explain why F-, the strongest base among the halide ions, is the best nucleophile in polar aprotic solvents while iodide the weakest base
A chemical reaction takes place in a container of cross-sectional area 100 cm2. As a result of the reaction, a piston is pushed out through 21 cm against an external pressure of 534 torr.
a reaction is begun with a reaction mixture containing the following dye 1.0 x 10-4 m bleach 0.10 m when dye 8.0 x
Write a balanced equation showing one mole of this liquid compound combusting inO2 (gas) to produce CO2 (gas) and H2O (liq).
What is the angular momentum of an electron in an orbital having 1 quanta of angular momentum
Why did the grape juice change color when an acid or base was added. 5. You added a base, sodium bicarbonate, to test tube 1 that contained citric acid and an acid to test tube 2 that contained base.
The heat capacity of the coffee cup (without the water) is 9.2 J/K. If the final temperature of the system is 31.1°C, what is the specific heat capacity of the alloy? (c of water is 4.184 J/g×K)
Benzoic acid, HC7H5O2, is a weak monoprotic acid. 10.81 g of sodium benzoate, NaC7H5O2, which is the conjugate base, is placed in a 0.500 L beaker and its pH is measured. It is found the pH of the solution is 8.69.
The synthesis of H2SO4 consists of three main chemical processes: (1) oxidation of S to SO2, (2) oxidation of SO2 to SO3, (3) the dissolving of SO3 in H2SO4 and its reaction with water to form H2SO4. If the third process produces 130kJ/mol, how mu..
