Select TWO journal articles that will be included in your final essay and provide a critical review for each paper. These papers must be peer-reviewed academic journal articles. The reviews should include: • a very brief summary of the text, identifying the purpose and main arguments contained within the article, the identity of the author, what their background is, and, if relevant, how this influences the position that the article takes • provide a critical response to the item, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the article in areas such as the validity of the data and evidence relied on, the purpose and scope of the article, the effectiveness of the argument/s, the bias or logical shortcomings present, the presence of assumptions • discuss the article in the context of the broader academic literature on the topic (this will require you to draw on other sources which will need to be cited and referenced) • provide your overall assessment of the article in regards to the effectiveness of the text, the integrity of the argument, and the identification of areas where counter arguments could have been incorporated (remember this is an academic essay - try and avoid writing in 1st person point of view). Writing a critical review helps you to analyse, describe and interpret a text to show your understanding of what you have read. A critical review is not just a summary. It is an evaluation of what an author has said about a topic. • Critical evaluation • Evidence of analysis • Development of position and argument • Validity of deductions and conclusions • Clarity of structure • Sustained evidence of correct citation and referencing • Expression and grammar
