A foundation (a slab of concrete) resting on the surface of a saturated over consolidated clay is to be designed to support a column load including the weight of the foundation of 250 kN. Groundwater level is at the surface. A one-dimensional consolidation test on a sample of the clay at its natural water content of w = 40% and taken at a depth of 2 m gave the following results: Cc = 0.54, Cr = 0.108, and OCR = 12. Atterberg limit tests gave LL = 70% and PL = 30%. No other tests were conducted. For a preliminary design, assume a circular footing 2.5 m in diameter and v' = 0.35.
(a) Determine if the increase in stresses from the foundation will cause the clay at a depth of 1 m to yield.
(b) If the clay does not yield, calculate the factor of safety for undrained condition.
(c) Calculate the excess pore water pressure due to the foundation load.
(d) Assuming that the stress state at the depth of 1 m represents the average stress state over a thickness of 2 m of the clay, calculate the settlement of the foundation. Is this settlement elastic or elastoplastic?
(e) How much long-term settlement would occur from the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure?
All stormwater will drain as sheet flow to the center, flow into a drop inlet, and travel through a pipe system to the nearest stream. The parking lot will be mowed grass (clay soil) with a slope of 2 percent toward the center.
Consider a DVD To protect sensitive information within the storage medium, a vwery thin film of reactive polymer is embedded within the polycarbonate at a distance of d= 0.5 mm from the surface.
a saturated silty clay encountered in a deep excavation is found to have a water content of 23.5%. determine its porosity and bulk unit weight.
assume that the whole twisting moment is taken by the bone. If the humerus can withstand a shear stress Tmax=70.0 MPa, determine the maximum force the hand can apply without fracturing the humerus. The length of the forearm is 360 mm.
The bolts have a mean diameter of 1.000 cm, normally distributed with standard deviation of 0.010 cm. The holes have a mean diameter of 1.030 cm, normally distributed with standard deviation of 0.015 cm.
The mass center of the unbalanced disk of weight W is located at G, which is a distance of R/2 from the center for the disk. In the equilibrium postition, the two springs attached to the rim of the disk are undeformed.
The pulley at B is connected to a motor that is driving the system. The other three pulleys are consuming the power delivered by Pb . Pa = 20kW, Pb = 75kW, Pc = 30kW, and Pd = 25kW and the shaft is rotating at 120rpm.
Standard air is drawn from the atmosphere into a 1.25 m diameter cylindrical duct by a fan mounted inside the duct. This air is discharged down stream from the fan through a 0.6 m diameter duct at a velocity of 25 m/s and atmosphere pressure.
It is known that a horizontal curve starts (has PC) 90m before the vertical curve's PVC. If the superelevation of the horizontal curve is .08 and the central angle is 38 degrees what is the station of the PT
A PVC pipe with a diameter of 30 inches will carry a flow of 20 cfs. the bottom slope is 0.005 and the roughness coefficient is 0.015. determine the normal depth, critical depth, velocity and the froude number.
Estimate the liquid volume of an aeration tank (units of m^-3) required to treat the following wastewater to a BOD effluent standard of 30.0 mg L^-1 and a suspended solids effluent standard of 30 mg L^-1.
