Former President Clinton was impeached (brought to trial before the Senate, though he was not convicted and removed from office) for lying to investigators about his inappropriate sexual relationship with a White House intern. The president said he was trying to protect his marriage (and protect his wife from the pain of his infidelity). However, he stood in front of a television camera and told the country he did not have sexual relations with the intern (later to be revealed as untruthful).

Should President Clinton’s primary concern have been as a husband (protecting his marriage) or as a president (telling the people the truth)? Which action would have been more ethical?

Many defenders of the former president said his personal, private relationship with the intern had nothing to do with his job and therefore should not have come to the light of public scrutiny. Given that he left the presidency with a high approval rating, can a viable case be made that his defenders were right?
