In a production cell dedicated to the manufacture of a specific product family, the following data corresponding to 15 workdays were obtained. The cell works 8 hours a day.
In the 15 days that were studied, 7.5 hours was planned and used for preventive maintenance. Breakdowns consumed 4 hours. The total production was 20,180 products, but 350 of those products were defects. The theoretical daily production is 3,000 products.
After a SMED implementation, the following data were collected for a similar 1 5-day period. In those 15 days, 6.5 hours of preventive maintenance also was used. Breakdowns consumed 5.5 hours. The total production was 20,200 units, including 150 defect products. The theoretical daily production continues to be 3,000 products.
a. How has the SMED implementation varied the overall equipment efficiency (OEE) rate?
b. Is the result obtained consistent with the SMED implementation? Briefly explain.
c. Why has the number of defects decreased. Briefly explain.
