Assignment - Politeness Theory Project

Task: Transcribe a short section from a TV chat show on a local or regional TV channel. Identify the politeness strategies employed by the host(s) and guest(s) and any reactions to these strategies. What do your findings suggest about the relationship between the host(s) and guest(s), and about the wider aims of this kind of show?

Organization: Your paper should follow a clear organizational pattern as follows:

a. Introduction: Introduce the topic and the main investigation.

b. Context: Provide necessary background information about the context (The TV show), the speakers, and the specific interaction you have chosen to analyze.

c. Transcription of the extract (Follow The Jefferson Notation System)

d. Findings and Discussion: Identify the different politeness strategies (at least 6 instances/examples) used by the host(s) and guest(s) and any reactions to these strategies. Additionally. Discuss what your findings suggest about the relationship between the host(s) and guest(s), as well as the wider aims of this show.

Note - Words Count: 700. Assignment about politeness theory strategies, speech acts, and face threatening acts (FTAs).

The assignment basically is choosing two 5mint extracts that can be a one-one TV interview or audio perhaps (which I'll provide these extracts them for you) and firstly: transcribe the extract and type it down using the Jefferson Transcription System (Which I will also provide a guide for) Secondly: These two extracts need to be analyzed based on speech and FTAs found in these extracts. 6 different examples of total FTAs and/or speech need to be provided from these extracts. With a clear analysis of what type of speech act or FTA it is and why it has been used.

Secondly: These two extracts need to be analyzed based on speech and FTAs found in these extracts. 6 different examples of total FTAs and/or speech need to be provided from these extracts. With a clear analysis of what type of speech act or FTA it is and why it has been used (I'll upload the PP and assisting document for further guide) This includes the analysis and the transcription as well. Make sure that each extract (video) you find 5-6 examples of speech act from it if possible. Font: 12 Times New Roman, 1.5 spacing.
