1. (Critical Approach) First, identify one of critical approaches that we have explored in class to use in your critique. This might be an approach that you find particularly persuasive or one that you want to understand better. (Nationalism, gender, disability, race and ethnicity, class or more specific issues) Next review the readings and main concepts that we explored in that section.
2. (Your story) Next, Identify an aspect of media related to the above concept that is relevant to your life. Think about your relationship to an event, a piece of political media, brand, a product, a protest an advertisement, a cultural practice a film, a song, a television show, an app, etc. This phenomenon should meet two criteria:
1. It should be something that illustrates one of the critical approaches above.
2. It should be something deeply personal to you.
3. It should be something that you are willing to share publicly.
In other words, the topic, moment, habit, etc. will be something that you now understand differently or more clearly as a result of one of the critical approaches we've explored in class. You will tell us a vivid personal story about your topic/experience that illustrates how it is relevant.
3. (Social Power) Each critical approach draws our attention to certain problems that have to do with power, democracy (via a more or less informed citizenry) or social transformation. Identify how this problem of power is at work in your example. Remember that the key question regarding power is what role does (media related thing) play in (reproducing, or challenging) some aspect of an unequal social order.
Using these three elements, your assignment will be to write a personal narrative that will be between 500 and 600 words.
