Smilin is a (hypothetical) protein that causes people to be happy. It is inactive in many chronically unhappy people. The mRNA isolated from a number of different unhappy persons in the same family was found to lack an internal stretch of 173-nucleotides that are present in the Smilin mRNA isolated from a control group of generally happy people. The DNA sequences of the Smilin genes from the happy and unhappy persons were determined and compared. They differed by just one nucleotide change---and no nucleotides were deleted. Moreover, the change was found in an intron. Can you hypothesize a molecular mechanism by which a single nucleotide change in a gene could cause the observed internal deletion in the mRNA? Be sure to include a comparison of the mechanism that is involved between what happens in the normal and mutant transcript. What consequences for the Smilin protein would result from removing a 173-nucleotide-long internal stretch from the coding region of the Smiling mRNA?
Explain how does homeostasis maintain a dynamic range of environmental qualities rather than hold the internal environment at a set point?
A form of vitamin D-resistant rickets, known as hypophosphatemia, is inherited as an x-linked dominant trait. If a male with hypophosphatemia, marries a normal female, which predictions concerning their potential progeny would be true.
A very common type of red or green colorblindness in humans is a X-linked recessive trait. A woman who is red or green colorblind marries a man with normal color vision.
While a tall homozygous plant was crossed with a short homozygous plant, the F1 offspring were all tall. No short plants were present in the F1 generation. Which principle does this situation represent.
In humans, male pattern baldness is due to an autosomal locus where bald is dominant in males and recessive in females.
A scientist randomly separated a group of 100 lab rats into two groups of 50. One group was fed regular rat chow while the other was fed the same quantity of rat chow with added ddt. Both groups were housed in the same room with the same environmenta..
Create a BIO 113 Labe Report based on a experiment we did on the variances in photosynthtic activity in the Elodea plant.
What is the dissimilarity between vag and vrg genes? How are BvgS and BvgA involved in regulation of virulence genes? What is a phase variation in B. pertussis and what causes it.
Illustrate the main types of faults and corresponding directions of stress. Differentiate between fault and joint. How does the stress differ between the two? Of what importance are these fractures to other geological processes.
Why can there be dissimilarity between heart rate averaged over 15 seconds and instantaneous heart rates. Suppose that green turtle grass ingestion time for the sea urchins has an approximate normal distribution.
Concerns surrounding both dehydration and over hydration. Focus on water, sodium and potassium. How reliable is thirst as a guiding factor in fluid intake?
