A hypersonic gun tunnel is used to generate short-duration, high-speed flows and typically consists of two cylindrical volumes separated by a diaphragm. One end of the tunnel (the driver end) is pumped to a high pressure, while the other end (the driven end) is evacuated to a low pressure. At a set pressure difference the diaphragm ruptures producing a high speed flow of gas that can be used to test a model at supersonic speeds. For a driver end of volume 0.781m3 containing nitrogen at 300 bar, 27°C, and an evacuated driven end of volume 11.9m3, determine the following. Assume that the tunnel operates adiabatically. a) The total mass of the gas, in kg, present in the system. b) The final temperature, in K, and the final pressure, in bar, of the gas after the diaphragm breaks and the system reaches equilibrium.
