Joey is studying chemistry and is learning about solutions. He thought that all solutions were the same. He now knows that in addition to solutions that there are colloids and suspensions and that different types of filters can be used to separate the particulate matter from suspensions and colloids.

Joey's homework assignment is to walk through his home and describe the different types of solutions, colloids and suspensions that he finds. As he is preparing dinner, he uses the garbage disposal below his sink to grind up particulate matter. He realizes that the waste water plant must separate this ground up matter from the water.

Can you help Joey with his homework assignment? How do waste water plants use chemistry to purify water? What other types of examples can you suggest for Joey to investigate?
