Issues in Sustainability
Assignment : Essay on a Sustainability Issue
On a topic related to an area of sustainable development covered in the module write an essay of up to 2,000 words (e.g. food, travel, tourism, ecology, energy, housing, health - though this list is not exhaustive).
Students are required to set their own title. This reflects one of the overarching aims of the module,
i.e. to encourage students to explore sustainability issues that are of relevance/interest to them.
Here are some ideas to give an indication of what is being asked for, though you are encouraged to create a bespoke title that fits the particular sustainability issue you have chosen:
How sustainable is sustainable tourism?
Are capitalism and conservation compatible?
An examination of the implications of radically reducing oil dependency.
Why have global increases in food production in recent decades failed to deliver significant gains in global food security?
In order to meet learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3 you are required to present your argument within the context of published views and ideas from recognized academic and/or professional commentators on the subject. The on-line reading list compiled for the module is a good starting point for wider readings relevant to this assignment.
Your essay should be presented and structured in the form of an academic essay (introduction, main body, conclusion, references). Harvard Style referencing conventions should be followed.
Criteria for Assessment:The aim of the essay is to present a convincing and well-informed critical discussion of a chosen issue in sustainability. Your work will be assessed on the following criteria:
• Evidence of a grasp of core issues and themes relevant to chosen sustainability issue
• Use and understanding of academic sources
• Evidence of logical structure
• Quality of the argument presented
• Style and grace in presenting your argument (this involves clarity, grammar, etc.)
