Your second assignment is to write a short paper (4-5 pages) in answer to one of the following two questions. Be sure to address every element of the question you answer, and to support your arguments with examples drawn from the entire 1967-1992 period. (You may, if it suits your purposes, extend your chronology a little earlier than 1967 and/or a little later than 1992.)

Consider U.S. policies toward the Persian Gulf region from about 1967 to about 1992. What were America's overriding strategic and political objectives in this region during those years? What policies did the U.S. government design and implement to achieve those objectives? Which of those policies were the most successful and which were the least? How do you account for the successes and failures?
