Discussion: The Story Of An Hour
The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is told in third person narration. The way you can tell this is because they are able to see and know what everyone is saying, thinking and doing. The narrator Talks about and tells the actions of a few characters, "It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences" (Chopin,1894), "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same"(Chopin,1894). Those are two examples of two different characters being talked about. This effects our reading because we are able to see the entire story. Had it been told only from the doctors view then we may not been able to tell that it wasn't actually joy that killed Mrs. Mallaed in the end but it was the stress of seeing her husband alive and her new found freedom dead. If it had been told in the first person by Mrs. Mallard then we wouldn't know how concerned her sister and husbands friend were for her heart condition and breaking the news about her husbands death. Third person narration was a great choice for this story because we get to see the truth and what everyone around Mrs. Mallaed believes is the truth.
