“Here at Home, Economic History Repeats Itself”
The Industrial Age gave rise to great disparities in wealth and living conditions as more and more people moved from being entrepreneurial farmers to wage-earning factory workers. Labor unions got their start in response to the difficulties and poor working conditions. In America today, the spread between “haves and have-nots” is again on the rise with the decline of the middle class and loss of high-paying manufacturing jobs. Please respond to the following:
•Since social fairness is a virtuous quality (and one of the pillars of this country’s founding), explain why America did not embrace the revolutionary social theories purported by Marx and Engels.
•Describe some of the social “shock absorbers” currently put in place by the federal government and available to citizens who are experiencing difficult times.
•Take a position on whether you think the level of political corruption in present day America is less than, the same as, or more than the corruption reported in “The Politics of the Industrial Age” and give evidence for your opinion.
