Frame analysis and represent the moments

Figure below shows a "sway" frame with 14×14 inch columns and 14×26 in beams. The moments computed for column AB are from the frame analysis and represent the moments about x-x axis of the column cross section.

Mxuns=650 in.kips, Mxus = 110 in-kips and Pu = 105 kips.

In the direction perpendicular to the plane, the framing is considered as "no-sway" and theoretically, there is no moment transferred to the column; thus use the minimum amount of moment based on emin (however, you will need to use magnification factor for this moment also).

Use βd = 0 for the "sway" frames and 0.4 for "no-sway" frames for all calculations. Use Cm=1 when computing the magnification factor for the moment with respect to y-y axis of the column.

fy = 60,000 and f'c = 4,000 psi.

1. Compute the design moment with respect to the x-x axis of the cross section.

2. Compute the design moment with respect to the y-y axis of the cross section.

3. Using the results from Parts 1 and 2, check if the column design is acceptable using Breseler's equations
