Use the following scenario to guide your response to the questions below: You recently accepted a position as the Marketing Manager/Vice-President of Marketing within a large community bank. This is a new position that was created to add a layer to a growing marketing department.Originally all of the twelve members of the marketing department reported directly to Tom Bates, the Director of Marketing/Executive Vice-President. However, due to his increasing responsibilities with other senior leadership activities in the organization outside the marketing department, you have been brought in to oversee the marketing department and will be reporting directly to Tom. Tom is a very seasoned member of the bank. He started at the organization 28 years ago as a marketing intern and has worked his way up through the organization. He has very traditional viewpoints on management and uses primarily a transactional form of leadership, based upon strict guidelines, micro-management, rewards, and punishment. Tom is more of a banker first and a marketer second since he is very knowledgeable about financial services and is a member of the senior management team. You, on the other hand, are a seasoned marketer, having held management positions in an advertising agency and a sports marketing firm. You have an entrepreneurial perspective, love marketing, and believe in transformational leadership styles. You feel that employees should be empowered to make their own decisions and you hate micro-managing employees. You truly know nothing about financial services, which is why you were brought into the organization by the management team; to provide a fresh perspective. Now that you are at the company, you have tried to implement a transformational style of management, but your employees are not responding. They continue to come to you for help with projects and ask your input on small decisions. You have continued to stress that they have the power and capabilities to make their own decisions, but the employees lack the confidence and experience to step out into an autonomous atmosphere. Some employees have started to complain amongst themselves that you are not providing adequate management and leadership for them and they miss the hands-on nature of Tom.
Based on this scenario, respond to the following: What should you do to earn the trust and respect of your new employees and ensure that they remain motivated? Are you going to be forced to revert back to the transactional leadership style that Tom used? Explain your answers in detail.
