Public Policy and Political Science

The high cost of health care has forced some people to choose between medical treatment and other necessities such as food, heat, or electricity. A recent survey concluded that 43% of America's working-age adults did not see a doctor or access other medical services during the past year because of the cost.63 Following a recent advertising campaign urging adults to seek medical assistance when needed, physicians' groups hope this percentage has decreased. A random sample of 1000 working Americans was obtained, and 380 did not seek medical assistance when needed, because of the cost.

a. Is there any evidence to suggest the proportion of American workers who did not seek medical assistance has decreased? Use a = 0.01.

b. Find the probability of a type II error in this hypothesis test for pa = 0.38; that is, find β (0.38).

c. Find a value of pa such that the probability of a type II error is 0.1; that is, solve β(pa) = 0.1 for pa.

d. Find the sample size necessary such that the probability of a type II error for pa = 0.35 is 0.025; that is, solve β (0.35) = 0.025 for n.
