Q1. The Smith Clinic has recently decided to pursue a total quality of care initiative in the emergency department (ED) where customer input is a vital portion of the equation.  In doing so, management has decided to use statistical process control tools as a mechanism to determine where (or if) there are any issues in the current system.  The main customer-related metrics under consideration are customer satisfaction, evaluation of the quality of care, the time it takes to be seen by the medical staff, and the time it takes for a final decision to be made (i.e., admitted, released, etc.). The data are collected by a third party organization via telephone interviews with respondents identified from hospital records so as to ensure the matching of the patient to the specific visit date/time (see Table 1 for the description of the items being assessed).

The emergency department currently is staffed by two 'crews' whereby there is a day team and a night team.  The data on each of the metrics is shown in Tables 2-5 and is denoted as being attributable to either of the crews.  Your job as the newly appointed quality champion is to make an assessment of the current status of the initiative while offering specific recommendations for what (if anything) needs to be done.  In your answer, you would be expected to address both the current SPC system as well as any potential changes you think would benefit the clinic.

Q2. Recently, the Big 12 athletic conference has experienced a change in membership.  Specifically, two members (Texas A&M and Missouri) have left to pursue other interests while two other organizations (West Virginia and Texas Christian) have agreed to join the eight other member institutions. Given this changing landscape, the commissioner of the Big 12 has decided to re-evaluate the location of the conference office. Your task is to provide a recommendation to the commissioner on where the conference office should be located. In making your recommendation, you should conduct an analysis (using the tools covered in class) and provide logical support as to why you chose to include a specific set of variables. Below you will find the conference mission statement, a map of all current Big 12 member institutions, a table of specifics about each institution, and pertinent information about potential cities where the office could be located (although you do not have to recommend one of these cities or use any/all of the information about each).

Conference Mission Statement

The member institutions of the Big 12 Conference are committed to competition in an arena where sportsmanship and the sense of fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, within the community or in the classroom, those who make up the Big 12--its administrators, coaches, game officials, and student-athletes--support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

At the heart of sportsmanship is the commitment of the institutions towards respect for the opposition and those officiating contests in the 23 sports sponsored by the Big 12. It is with a sense of fair play that a true sporting demeanor in the spirit of intercollegiate competition can be created and maintained with a total regard for the welfare of student-athletes, coaches, support personnel and spectators.
