Find an interesting landmark Supreme Court case from the following website:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_landmark_court_decisions_in_the_United_States. The case should have something to do with rights or liberties. Read the Wikipedia entry and whatever other websites you can find to answer the following questions (summarize in YOUR OWN WORDS). What happened in the case? What the person or the government do? What law was broken? What part of the Constitution was at issue? How did the court rule and why? Do you agree with the outcome of the case? Why or why not?

Part 2: Write 100 words respond to my classmate post.

The Supreme Court case that stuck out the me was the Phillips vs. Martin Marietta Corp. which concerns discrimination based on sex. The case occurred because the Martin Marietta Corp. has a rule that they will not hire women with pre-school age children under the assumption that they would be unreliable employees; Ida Phillips had applied for this job but was turned down due to her mother status. Martin Marietta Corp.'s rule is discriminatory towards women, seeing as how men with pre-school aged children are allowed to be hired, and broke the Title VII law of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that states that it is illegal to discriminate one on the basis of their gender. The Supreme Court unanimously agreed that the Martin Marietta Corp.'s rule is discriminatory as it kept only women from acquiring a job at the company. The case was sent to a lower court to be ruled, and the lower court ruled that it was not discriminatory because the company was open about it. Phillips appealed the case and the original ruling was overturned, the final ruling was " that employers may not refuse to hire women with pre-school aged children, unless the same standards are applied to men". I agree with this ruling because it established true equality, fatherhood is just as demanding as motherhood and should fall under the same guidelines. Not that I agree with the sentiment that a mother is incapable of work but if a woman is viewed as incapable for being a mother, a man should be viewed the same for being a father.
