A simple solvent extraction is used to determine the concentration of SDS (sodium dodecylsulphate) in river water. The student takes 5.0 mL of river water, adds 5.0 mL of reagent, and 5.0 mL of distilled water and extracts the sample into 20 mL of chloroform. The absorbance of the chloroform solution was 0.125. A second 5.0 mL aliquot of river water was taken, 5.0 mL of reagent, and 5.0 mL of 1.0 ppm SDS were mixed and extracted in 20 mL chloroform and the absorbance of the chloroform layer was found to be 0.286. What is the concentration of SDS?
