A soil is to be compacted on a site and it is expected that the soil contains a high percentage of montmorillonite.

1) Briefly explain the working principles of two tests that can be carried out to ascertain the presence of montmorillonite in the soil.

2) Should the soil be compacted at the dry of optimum or at the wet of optimum condition in order to minimize the swelling potential? Briefly explain the reason for your answer.
