Assignment

US POLITICS

As discussed in class, as well as your textbook, those who occupy seats in the House, Senate, or White House serve for fixed terms, after which they must seek reelection. In the case of the Presidency, terms are further limited to service of two terms or a total of 10 years. Federal judges, however, do not serve under the same system of fixed terms. All members of the judiciary, upon nomination and confirmation, serve an unlimited term on the bench. One outcome of this has been longer terms on the Supreme Court bench. From 1789 to 1970, the average Supreme Court Justice served for 15.2 years and retired at 68.5. But since 1970, the average tenure has risen to 25.5 years and the average age at departure to 78.8. Do you believe Supreme Court members should be term-limited? (Defend this answer) In arguing and defending your stance to (1) above, include in your discussion counter-points made by those on the opposite side of the argument. Review and utilize the web pages at Find Law and Legal Affairs to make your argument. Both provide very good overviews of both the pro and con arguments on this topic. These articles should be utilized in crafting the arguments you utilize for this essay assignment. Answers do not require a specific word or page count. By way of format, you may wish to utilize either a standard three-paragraph essay, or five-paragraph essay, format. Information on both three-paragraph and five-paragraph formats have been added in the "Start Here" section of Blackboard.
