Standing waves are set up in organ pipes. Consider an organ pipe with a fixed length, which may be open or closed. An open pipe is open at both ends, and a closed pipe is closed at one end and open at the other. A standing wave will have an antinode at an open end and a node at a closed end ( Fig. 6.21). In the figure, determine (draw) the wavelengths of the first three characteristic frequencies for the pipes. That is, the first three wavelength segments that will "fit" into the pipes. Express your answers in terms of the length L of the pipe-for example, L /3 or 3L (not correct values).
