an object of some undetermined material and mass is suspended by a spring of unknown spring constant. The spring is elongated by 2.7 cm when the object is attached to its end. While still attached to the spring the object is now fully immersed in water (it does not float). The spring is now elongated by 1.7 cm. The water vessel is cylindrical and the radius of the cylinder is 10 cm. When the object is immersed in the water the water level goes up by 1 cm.
From the above information determine the following
(a) The specific gravity of the material and what it is most likely made of (Lead? Mercury? Iron? Aluminum?)
(b) Find the mass of the material
(c) Find the spring constant
(d) If the object has remained immersed in the water, but the same spring had been compressed by 0.5 cm after immersion instead of remaining elongated by 1.7 cm, what would the specific gravity of the material have been?
