Rod AB is horizontal with both ends fixed; it consists of n elements, each of which is homogeneous and of uniform cross section, and is subjected to the loading shown. The length of element i is denoted by Li, its cross-sectional area by Ai, its modulus of elasticity by Ei, and the load applied to its right end by Pi, the magnitude Pi of this load being assumed to be positive if Pi is directed to the right and negative otherwise. (Note that P1 = 0.)

(a) Write a computer program that can be used to determine the reactions at A and B, the average normal stress in each element, and the deformation of each element.

(b) Use this program to solve Probs. 2.41 and 2.42.

Problem 2.42

Solve Prob. 2.41, assuming that rod AC is made of brass and rod CE is made of steel.

Prob. 2.41

Two cylindrical rods, one of steel and the other of brass, are joined at C and restrained by rigid supports at A and E. For the loading shown and knowing that Es = 200 GPa and Eb = 105 GPa, determine

(a) the reactions at A and E,

(b) the deflection of point C
