A 50-mm-thick air gap separates two horizontal metal plates that form the top surface of an industrial furnace. The bottom plate is at Th = 200°C and the top plate is at Tc = 50°C. The plant operator wishes to provide insulation between the plates to minimize heat loss. The relatively hot temperatures preclude use of foamed or felt insulation materials. Evacuated insulation materials cannot be used due to the harsh industrial environment and their expense. A young engineer suggests that equally spaced, thin horizontal sheets of aluminum foil may be inserted in the gap to eliminate natural convection and minimize heat loss through the air gap.
(a) Determine the convective heat flux across the gap when no insulation is in place.
(b) Determine the minimum number of foil sheets that must be inserted in the gap to eliminate free convection.
(c) Determine the conduction heat flux across the air gap with the foil sheets in place.
Calculate the ratio of the network over the amount of heat absorbed at the high temperature of the cycle. How does this value compare to the theoretical efficiency of the Carnot cycle that is calculated based on the two operating temperatures?
Determine the pinch temperature and the minimum utility requirements for the process set out below. Take the minimum approach temperature as 15 °C. Devise a heat-exchanger network to achieve maximum energy recovery.
Size the vessel to restrict the carryover of liquid droplets. The liquid hold-up time need not be considered, as the liquid level will be a function of the thermal design.
Statistics on the global Nanofiltration market outlook,ie, market trends, size and application. Market drivers and industry structure (market analysis) and likely demand in promising segment such as the water industry or the pharmaceutical ind..
What will be the percentage increase of the radiation coefficient hr under the changed conditions?
Ten kmol per hour of air is throttled from upstream conditions of 298.15 K (25°C) and 10 bar to a downstream pressure of 1.2 bar. Assume air to be an ideal gas with Cp = (7/2)R.
Assume the plant is built at time zero and begins operation at full rate in year 1. Assume the rate of corporate income tax is 35% and taxes must be paid based on the previous year's income.
Assuming adiabatic operation and negligible changes in kinetic and potential energies, determine the turbine efficiency, i.e., the ratio of actual work of the turbine to the work of a turbine operating isentropically from the same initial conditio..
Describe the facilities and equipment plan and technology plan? Also prepare an organizational chart that depicts the company's structure.
If you are drilling in a normally pressured zone, what pressure would you expect at 12,000 ft. (TVD) (TVD is True Vertical Depth) (round off to the nearest whole number)
The full-load slip is 4%. Determine the percentage reduction in the applied voltage (i.e., the percentage tap on the autotransformer).
