BIOMECHANICS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT ASSIGNMENT - Introduction to Qualitative + Quantitative Analysis in Biomechanics

Part A: Qualitative: Use of Hudson's (1995) Core Concepts in Kinesiology

The article is found at: https://www.csuchico.edu/∼jhudson/pdf/corecons.pdf

Instructions:

  • First, read the article at the link above.
  • Select a situation where you can observe movement for an extended period. Some examples would be spectating at a live sporting, fitness or dance event (especially one which is somewhat unfamiliar to you - although this is not necessary). You must actually go to an event to do a live observation.
  • Use APA style cover page, running head, and page for your analysis report.

1. Report the specifics of your observation (where, what, environment, date, time, practice/competition/rehearsal, etc. - be specific for credit).

2. Identify and explain which of the ten core concepts from Hudson's article seem to matter. For example, which concepts seem most obvious or most important? Why? Select at least 4.

Try to make some simple, eyeball measurements of the concepts. For example, which concepts are easier to observe? How would you rate the amount of a given concept (e.g., was there little/moderate/large range of motion)? Why is this measurement necessary to the outcome of the movement? For example, why is that amount of range of motion necessary? Include at least 4.

Imagine manipulating some concepts. For example, what happens when you increase the range of motion? What happens when you decrease the range of motion? When you change one concept, do others change as well? Give clear and specific critical thinking examples here.

3. Log this experience in a paper that is clear and logical, and is written in proper style that utilizes APA cover page, running head, page #s, etc. along with proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Double space. No reference page required. APA cover page, running head, page numbers info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61GUwn3zVMM.

Part B: Quantitative: Basic Math Review

  • Show all work for credit NEATLY on a separate sheet of lined paper.
  • Carry your units and only round your final answer (two units past the decimal point).
  • Please highlight or underline the final answer.

1. Solve for x in each equation below:

1. x = 43

2. x2 = 34 + 135

3. 24 = x/2

4. 17 - 8 = x * 3

5. 8 * 4 = -10 + x

6. x = √121

7. -24/3 = x + 12

8. x + 22 = √81 * 3

Given that F = ma, or force = mass * acceleration, solve the next two problems:

2. A linebacker with a mass of 122 kg tackles Ryan Tannehill during an American football game. He hit Ryan with a force of 2700N. Determine the acceleration necessary by the player at contact to generate such a force.

3. How much force must be applied by a kicker to give a stationary 1.5 kg ball an acceleration of 36 m/s2?

4. Given that 1 kg = 2.2 lb, how much does a 182 kg sumo wrestler weigh?

5. Create your own realistic "story problem" relative to Exercise and Sport Science that incorporates the formula, time = distance/speed. Solve the problem.

6. Given that C2 = A2 + B2 for a right triangle, find the length of the hypotenuse (C) for the triangle at the right.
