1. The variation of (2S/dt + Q) with Q, of a basin is given by Q = 0.0015(2S/dt + Q)2 + 0.195(2S/dt + Q) - 0.3833. The outlet structure is a weir with crest length L = 1.5 m set at elevation Y = 30.5 m and discharge coefficient kw = 0.4. The storage of the basin increases linearly from 0 at Y = 30.5 m to 16,980 m3 at Y = 35 m and the initial water level is at Y = 30.9 m.
(i) Determine the peak outflow rate when the following inflow hydrograph is routed through this basin.
(ii) What is the design storage and water surface elevation at the peak outflow rate.
a solid cylinder of 50 mm diameter and 900 mm length is subjected to a tensile force of 120kN. One part f the cylinder L1 long is of steel, the other part, fastened to steel, is aluminum and is L2 long.
Consider the flow of a gas between two parallel plates. If there were an increase in temperature due to heat transfer along the flow direction, the gas density would decrease. Assume the viscosity is unaffected.
In magnetic tape recording, the tape is subjected to tension while it is guided along its path. Tension in the tape causes elastic deformation that results in slight changes in length of the domains on which information is stored.
Determine the net rate of flow of linear momentum through the control surface.
A nozzle is designed to linearly accelerate the fluid from V1 to V2 (i.e., V = ax +b, where a and b are constants). Determine the local acceleration, the convective acceleration, and the total acceleration at point 1 and 2 at t = 0.
How much oxygen (mg O2) is required to support the complete oxidation of 500 mg acetate (CH3COOH). How much carbon dioxide (CO2) will be produced
For the beam shown be low, derive the equation of motion in the ∞- and y-directions. Recall that the deformation of a bar along its axis
Why is the anchorage capacity of a standard hook not increased by extending the bar well beyond the end of the hook
Determine the maximum allowable misclose for this engineering survey using the formula based on the munber of instriunent stations used in the work.
A power plant operates at steady-state. It receives energy from a hot source (combustion of fuel) at a temperature of 420 oC. The plant discharges this energy to a nearby river that acts as a cold source.
Assuming we are still in a world with only discrete investment choice, i.e., option A, option B, etc., describe a realistic investment problem where none of the environments discussed apply without some reframing.
Determine the normal depth in a trapezoidal channel with a bottom width of 6.4 ft and side slopes of 1 vertical to 2 horizontal. The discharge is 85 ft3/s. Manning's roughness factor is 0.025 and the channel bottom slope is 0.001
