Questions

1. Define the term population pyramid and explain in your own words how it can help you interpret characteristics of a population (in a defined area). If you have used any references, please provide them (in APA citation format with author, date, title, publisher, and place of publication, if you are used to using another citation format, please provide the name and apply consistently to all your references).

2. Describe each of the pyramids that you created (for your two selected countries). In particular, describe any differences between the age ranges and male and female sides.

3. Compare your two created pyramids with each other and the 2011 pyramids for Canada and Sault Ste. Marie produced by Statistics Canada (see below). How are the four similar or different? How can the birth and death rates be characterized? Compare the pyramids to the diagrams on p. 64-5 in the text (Peters, Larkin, Webb, & Otiso, 2013).

4. Using other population data on the U.S. Census site and Statistics Canada (for example Sault Ste. Marie community profile) and other websites on the countries/region gathered through an internet search, explain any reasons you can find for the differences in the pyramids. For example, what is the level of economic development in each country/region? And, is there in or out-migration from the region and if so, what ages are migrating? Finally, describe what services each country and region (Sault Ste. Marie) might need in 2025 to service its population.
