Power, Influence, & Leadership: From Becoming a Manager to Becoming a Leader "The two roles are the same to me." To your point about managers being leaders and vice versa, I really like Bergmann's (1999) Grass Roots Model. The reason I like this theory is because its major premise is that anyone can be a leader regardless of level. Grass Roots Leadership maintains that leadership does not have to come from the top. People at all levels can make decisions and coach and counsel others. I love this model because it challenges every organizational member to rise to become a leader. Some principles of the Grass Roots Model include the acronym CLIMB: Create a compelling future; Let the customer drive the organization; Involve every mind; Manage work horizontally, and Build personal credibility.
Do you think you have to be in a manager or above position in an organization to implement CLIMB?
