A conventional mercury thermometer consists of a thin glass capillary filled with mercury.  The capillary is enclosed in a protective glass cylinder.  These mercury thermometer can be quite sensitive and very precise.  When such a thermometer is placed into a pot of hot water one observes that the temperature reading first drops for a moment before it gradually rises.  Explain this phenomenon
