Compute and interpret a manova

Assignment Help Basic Statistics
Reference no: EM13994307

We will apply the theory and logic of MANOVA that we learned in our readings last week. You may want to review the material you read in the previous unit of Applied Statistics.

Pay special attention to the logic of combining two (or more) dependent variables and the reasons why a researcher might use MANOVA over separate univariate ANOVAs.

You must include an introduction and rationale for your analysis, your null and alternative hypotheses, your alpha level, descriptive statistics, output tables, and conclusions about the null. All tables and graphs must be properly labeled, and each must be discussed and interpreted in the paper.

You must show your understanding of the hypothesis testing method, as well as your understanding of what you are doing.

Write in third person, using a clear and professional tone, voice and style. Use proper APA citations and references as needed.

Objectives

To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

1. Generate SPSS output for two MANOVAs.

2. Interpret SPSS output for a MANOVA.

3. Appropriately apply the terms and logic of MANOVA

IBM SPSS MANOVA

After reading Chapter, conduct a MANOVA following the step-by-step instructions beginning on page 315. The data set is the primary one presented in the text, called grades.sav. This includes the five quiz scores as the dependent variables and section number and status as the independent variables. Run the Bonferroni and Tukey post hoc comparison tests, as given in the directions on page 321. Also include descriptive statistics, estimates of effect size, observed power, parameter estimates, and homogeneity test-again, following the step-by-step instructions on page 321.

Do the analysis twice, the first time as given above, and the second time using GPA as a covariate.

When you turn in your output, be sure to include a discussion (following APA 6th edition style) of the major results.

Follow the directions given at the end of the chapter. Reproduce all of the IBM SPSS output from the analysis and copy and paste them into a Word document called week8assign.doc. Also see the Data Analysis Formatting Guidelines, linked in the Resources, for more information. The entire assignment for this week is due by Sunday at midnight, Central Standard Time, in the assignment area.

EXERCISES

Answers to selected exercises are downloadable at www.pearsonhighered.comigeorge.

1. Using the grade.sav file, compute and interpret a MANOVA examining the effect of whether or not students completed the extra credit project on the total points for the class and the previous GPA.

2. Using the grades.sav file, compute and interpret a MANOVA examining the effects of section and lowup on total and GPA.

3. Why would it be a bad idea to compute a MANOVA examining the effects of section and lowup on total and percent?

4. A researcher wishes to examine the effects of high- or low-stress situations on a test of cognitive performance and self-esteem levels. Participants are also divided into those with high- or low-coping skills. The data are shown after question 5 (ignore the last column for now). Perform and interpret a MANOVA examining the effects of stress level and coping skills on both cognitive performance and self-esteem level.

5. Coping skills may be correlated with immune response. Include immune response le¬vels (listed below) in the MANOVA performed for Question 4. What do these results mean? In what way are they different than the results in Question 4? Why?

Stress Level   Coping Skills Cognitive Performance  Self-Esteem Immune Response
High  High  6 19 21
Low  High 5 18 21
High  High 5 14 22
High  Low 3 8 15
Low   High 7 20 22
High  Low 4 8 17
